My work has been strongly influenced by the environments surrounding me and my love of nature. As a young child I moved from my birthplace in sunny Los Angeles to a little farming community nestled against the western slopes of the Cascade mountains near the Canadian border. My earliest memories are of observing everything with fascination, from the smallest detail in a little wildflower, to the beauty of a worn out old shack or weathered tombstone amidst grey skies and brilliant green grass. I lived in an ever hazy overcast environment that would envelop my world for weeks.
When I moved to “Chicagoland” for much of my adolescence. I was surrounded by a thriving art scene and it was during this time that I realized I was an artist. If I wasn’t drawing or photographing my latest subject, I was thinking of it. When I drifted off to sleep, I would usually visualize different works that I wanted to create.
Although much of my work is self taught, I studied illustration, graphic design and photography at William James College, a liberal arts college that emphasized philosophical thinking based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This is where I still live, surrounded by nature.
For years, I kept my work to myself. It was a personal expression that I simply needed to do. In 2003, I decided to “go public.” My technique continues to evolve, reflecting my curiosity. I like to experiment and see what happens when you break the rules and do things differently. I express my creative energy through a unique process that I’ve innovated by blending traditional painting using minerals, with cameraless, filmless digital captures that are then printed on varies substrates including canvas and art paper.
